Other things to note
Split can boast not only of its historical heritage but also of its size, which makes it the second-largest city in Croatia. The city is surrounded by mountains (Mosor, Kozjak, and Perun) as well as islands (Brač, Hvar, Šolta, and Čiovo). The story of Split is already 17 centuries old, dating back to the time when the Roman Emperor Diocletian decided to build his palace right on the peninsula. Diocletian’s Palace, which was built at the turn of the fourth century, and today forms the core of the city, protected by UNESCO. A walk through the ancient city takes you through time, with great examples of ancient architecture such as the Peristyle; the main square of Diocletian’s Palace, called the heart of the palace. Today it is the entrance to the Cathedral of St. Domni and a popular gathering place. Other historical monuments include a medieval Romanesque church and a Gothic palace, Renaissance portals of noble houses. Visitors can experience Split like a local, playing “picigin” on one of the city’s Bačvice beaches, where the unique game was founded, or drinking coffee on the famous Riva promenade in the city center, enjoying the view of the city’s harbor and the south side of the Palace. However, if you decide to stay in Split and spend a few days exploring it, check out our place.
